類語の使い分け

類義語の使い分けを確認するときは、英英辞典でそれぞれの語を
調べるのも一つですが、"The Merriam-Webster Dictionary of
Synonyms and Antonyms"（類語辞典）が便利です。

例えば、"begin"の項目を見てみると、まずこのように書かれています。

begin, commence, start, initiate, inaugurate mean to take the first
step in a course, process, or operation.

とまずは類語が並んでおり、その次にそれぞれのニュアンスが説明
されています。

Begin is the most general and applies especially to less formal
contexts <school begins at eight> <began to wash the dishes>.

Start suggests a getting or setting into motion <the procession
started out slowly>.

Inaugurate implies a ceremonial beginning <the discovery of
penicillin inaugurated a new medical age>.

かっこ内に使い方の具体例まで示されているのでわかりやすいですね。
また、反対語も掲載されています。この例では"begin"の反対語は"end"、
"start"の反対語が"stop"とありますので、より違いが明確になります。

一般的な類語辞典も表現の幅を広げるのに有用ですが、より自然で
正しい語いの選択をするのに、もう一つこの辞書を手元においておくと
大いに役に立ちます。
